TURKEY: AT THE CROSSROADS OF ALL TENSIONS
An episode from the series EARTH ON EDGE
In August 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Izmit: 17 480 dead people. Since then, the authorities know that the sword of Damocles threatens the country. The experts claim the next earthquake will be in Istanbul because of a 150 km segment under the Marmara sea. German researchers consider that the probability of a 7 and more, magnitude earthquake in the capital in the next 20 years is between 35 and 70%.
