Today, there are nearly 600,000 housekeepers legally employed in France. Twice that number could be working undeclared. Many of them took this occupation out of necessity. They are disregarded, poorly paid and have no security. These women often have multiple employers and work long hours.
There are now companies specializing in home-based services offering training, permanent contracts and even job upgrades. But behind this new aspect of the business lies a troubling reality: housekeepers are quite often badly treated.
